Jimmy Scott's High & Tight: The Darren Daulton Interview
"It's just not that easy." In the Jimmy Scott's High & Tight Interview with Darren Daulton, you're going to hear from a guy who seemed to make leadership look easy. He was a part of the National League pennant-winning 1993 Philadelphia Phillies and the World Champion 1997 Florida Marlins. Why was he traded to the Marlins during the '97 stretch run? Leadership. It's what he did best.
But as his body broke down, he had to adapt. In the interview, "Dutch" Daulton goes to lengths explaining his position change from catcher to outfielder to first baseman. He tells us how hard it is to go from playing your whole life at one position to changing at the big league level. "If it were that easy, there'd be a lot more players up there doing it. It's just not that easy. That's why these guys get paid a lot of money. That's when you know you're watching good baseball players, when they make all the plays look easy."
Think about how Mike Piazza failed at first base and Todd Hundley failed in left field; both failing famously on the big New York stage. Then think about Craig Biggio, who went from catcher to 2nd base to outfield and, by chance, also acquire 3000 hits. Put Robin Yount in that category too. And, of course, Alex Rodriguez and Cal Ripken, Jr.
In the interview, Daulton also talks about his "infamous" 1991 car crash with Lenny Dykstra after John Kruk's bachelor party. He also gets into how his fire for the game was extinguished for a number of years after he didn't get the Phillies managerial job in 2001.
But he burned out. "You have to remember. It is a job. It's not an easy job. Compared to other jobs, you make a lot of money, you get to live the limelight, you get to do whatever you want at any minute of every day of your life. But...it's a hard job. If it was as easy as it looks, everybody'd be doing it and we'd have nobody to pick up the trash."
There's more, much more. But now it's time for you to listen and hear Darren "Dutch" Daulton. You're going to find out a few things you may not have known. And that's always a good thing.
