Say It With Flowers

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 19 September 2008

If you think all wives of us rich, famous, flashy ballplayers just sit around by the pool or tanning booth all day, chiuwawas on their laps, bluetooth phones at the ready, makeup just so and wearing a few pounds of jewelry, you're not right.  In other words, you'd be wrong to think that.  Oh yeah, there are some who do that.  That's how stereotypes start, isn't it?

I'd never sleep in the same bed as my Vanessa again if I didn't make it clear that many baseball wives are out there every day running households, doing errands, making sure kids get their homework done...  Some have jobs.  Some are lawyers.  Some go to school.

And then there's my good buddy Shonda Schilling.  First of all, she's six months older than me, so, as my elder, she has already earned my respect.  But beyond that, she's a great person.  Mother of four kids, husband of longtime MLB pitcher Curt Schilling, and advocate for ALS research and skin cancer prevention, Shonda is not the stereotypical baseball wife.  She's a very busy lady.  Here's a great example of what she does, with special thanks to her publicist, Katie Leighton:

After 7 years and  close to $1,000,000 raised....   next week, Shonda Schilling is  hosting her final Say It With Flowers Luncheon  for the ALS Association.

On Wednesday, September 24th at the Intercontinental Boston Hotel,  Shonda and Dawn Timlin (Mike Timlin's wife who has been co hosting for 4  years now) will host 400 woman for a day of fresh flowers, fabulous fun and  fruitful fundraising.  The goal is $250,000 to put the event over the  million dollar mark.  I am reaching out to Shonda's friends, family,  colleagues, piers, and anyone else I have dealt with through Curt &  Shonda in the past 8 years to see if you can assist Shonda and Dawn in  this milestone.
