Jimmy Scott's High & Tight: The John Fitzgerald "Playing For Peanuts" Interview

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 22 September 2008

I was very fortunate to recently get to spend some time with John Fitzgerald, the creator/writer/director of Playing For Peanuts, an independent production about minor league baseball.  You've read my updates about this show over the past couple of months.  This is the show that was aired on regional sports networks around the country and featured former Mets & Twins, Pirates, Phillies & Mariners 2nd baseman Wally Backman.  This is the show that was pulled off of the RSNs when John didn't feel New York's SNY was giving any promotion to.  This is the show that you can now download HERE.

But there's more.  Wally Backman has gotten most of the press with Playing For Peanuts, but there's a darker side to the show that you don't see while watching.  When you listen to my interview with John, he'll explain for the first time why Wally can't get a job in Major League Baseball anymore.  You're going to hear how Wally's been blackmailed over the last 4 years; how allegedly one man, a man whose wife cheated on him with Wally Backman years ago, has been able to get to the right personnel at the right time to tear down Wally.  You'll learn about this man, what he's said, what he's done, and get to judge for yourself why Wally's been blackballed from MLB.

You've got to watch Playing For Peanuts.  If you love baseball, if you find the stories of young kids desperate to play in the big leagues intriguing, if you like salty language at times and offbeat stories, you're going to love Playing For Peanuts.  Listen away.  You're going to find yourself on the edge of your seat.
