High & Tight Blog Review: Curtis Granderson's Blog

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 03 October 2008

Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers has been writing a blog two times a week for ESPN this season called Curtis Granderson's Blog.  Since the Tigers' season is done, so is Curtis.  But his blog will live on forever, or until the apocalypse wipes out all internet servers and we're back to making web pages on the walls of French caves.

You know what?  His blog is pretty good.

In his ultimate 2008 post, Curtis answered questions posed by fans.  Not just Tigers and Curtis Granderson fans, but baseball fans.  There were some good questions, like this:

Q: I am a Cardinals fan and whenever there is a pitching change in the middle of an inning, the outfielders huddle together in center field. What do you talk about? Is it more of a serious conversation talking about the game, or do you make jokes and try to have fun?
--Matt, Parts Unknown

Usually, it is never serious talk. We look around the stands, we make a lot of jokes about each other, things like that. Magglio and I always are laughing about something when we meet up in center.

Here's my criticism of Mr. Granderson (who has a lifetime average against me of .297).  He writes about good topics, i.e. rookie hazing, but, like other MLB player bloggers, he's still holding back.  It's like we're scared of writing something that could be perceived as controversial about another player or team.  Why?  We could be playing with that guy in 2 months.  Or we might need that team to make a bid for us when we're a free agent in November, creating a larger pool of suitors for our peculiar (since less than .011% of the world's population can do what we do) talents.  So I understand why everyone is so placid.  I just wish the lake could get a little bit choppier.

Of course, I'm commenting on the Curtis Granderson Blog because my wife, Vanessa, either has a huge crush on the man or likes the way he types.  When I ask her how she could get so emotionally involved with the blog of another man - another man who hits .297 lifetime against the husband who spent over $3000 to buy her a ring once - she just laughs and walks away.  Actually, it's more like a giggle.  A schoolgirl giggle.  The kind girls have...when they have a crush on somebody.  This bothered me a little, so I told Vanessa that next time "Grandy" faced me in the batters box, he was going to get a taste of some nice old canned heat!  Whoosh!  He better duck.  She just giggled again and skipped away, oblivious to my feelings.

Women.  You can't live with 'em and you can't let them read the blogs of other guys.
