Who's On First

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 01 November 2008

You must have one of those shows or movies that, every time you turn the TV stations and you come across it, you stop everything that you're doing (which is pretty much nothing, you're just pressing a button) and watch.  You ever do that?  You must.  At least, in America, this is what we are raised to do.  For me, one of those roadblocks between doing something of value, like eating, and not is The Brady Bunch.  You know the show, right?

All I have to hear is the opening lines of the theme song, "Here's the story, of a lovely lady..." and that's it.  I put off whatever else I had to do (like pee) for the next 30 minutes and watch.

Here's a true story.  Absolutely true.  I am not, repeat, not a psychic or clairvoyant.  I can barely spell "clairvoyant" without questioning if I'm spelling it correctly.  But here's the truth: I can think of a particular Brady Bunch episode and it will appear on my television set shortly thereafter, without any coaxing from me (meaning I don't own the full series on DVD or anything).  I will now think of an episode and prove this to you.  So let me think.  Please keep your voice down and don't scream your favorite episode at the computer.  That'll be too easy.  Thinking...  Thinking...  Okay, here's a good one, keeping up with the theme of this great website: There was once an episode in which former Dodgers first baseman Wes Parker appeared on the show.  That's it.  Let's sit back and wait.

Why was Wes on the show?  Honestly, I don't know.  He probably knew one of the producers and they needed a little local and inexpensive star power.  The Brady Bunch did that, you know.  They'd get stars on the show.  Remember the famous Davey Jones (of The Monkees) episode?

So, you're wondering how the heck I'm going to tie this all into the great Abbott & Costello "Who's On First" comedy bit.  I can do it.  And I don't need Kevin Bacon or six degrees of anything (farenheit [potentially spelled wrong here] or celsius) to help me do it.  Remember at the beginning of this post where I brought up the roadblocks between you, your couch and you not being on the couch?  The Brady Bunch was just one example I used to illustrate that the ultimate roadblock for me is Abbott & Costello's "Who's On First" routine.  It's so simple.  It's so addicting.  In a time when everyone lived in black & white, the skit is still funny today.

So keep your butt on your chair and view what Jimmy Scott thinks is one of the funniest bits ever about baseball, "Who's On First" by the great Abbott & Costello.
