Jimmy Scott's High & Tight: The Garrett Berger Interview

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 08 December 2008

Our endless Monday Morning series of new interviews continues today with Garrett Berger, a name you may not be familiar with (unless you're Garrett's mom or dad or dog).  Garrett was the Florida Marlins #1 pick in the 2001 minor league draft.  But because of a horrendous injury to his arm - which he describes for us, in detail - you've never heard of him.

So why should you listen?  Excellent question.  I have reasons.  First, we hear so much about the draft, not just in baseball but in all sports.  What happens to the guy after that?  Garrett describes the eyes that were on him before the draft.  He talks about how he was vetted as if he was going into the CIA.  What about the money?  He tells us how much he got and what he did with it.  What happens when an arm pops?  Plenty of detail here.  Extended spring training?  The Instructional League?  Treatment of a #1 pick before and after injury?  It's all here, and more.  Garrett gives it all up.

The next question is, since he didn't make it, what did he do?  He goes into that too, starting with Tommy John and the Bridgeport Bluefish and eventually leading to the start-up of his own business, iFungo.com, which sells top quality baseball equipment to Little Leagues, minor leaguers, and is represented by Ambassadors like ex-Major Leaguers Brian McRae and Brian Boehringer.

So if you've always wanted to know the behind-the-scenes goings-on in the minor leagues, you'll want to sit back and listen to Garrett Berger.  He says it all.  Just click on the funky block-arrow below:

I really enjoyed Garrett Berger's interview. It is unimaginable what it feels like to be a #1 pick, and severely injure your arm...it would seem like you didn't even get a chance. I am glad he is over it, and has his own business iFungo. I wish the best of luck to Garrett. -- Frank Bankruptcy lawyer
