The MLB Winter Meetings: What Do You Do? Gabriel Alvarez - AAA Clubhouse Manager, Fresno Grizzlies
Gabriel Alvarez is the Clubhouse Manager for the AAA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, the Fresno Grizzlies. Gabriel is attending the MLB winter meetings this year, but in a different capacity. Here's what he had to say:
"I am attending the Winter Meetings but not as a part of the Giants organization. I came to interview w/ the Giants for a position under their Director of Arizona Minor League Ops. I also came to network and see what other opportunities in Baseball Operations lie out there. Plus, it doesn't hurt that they're being held in Las Vegas. There are no meetings scheduled
for Clubhouse Managers here in Vegas. For the most part, I go around the hotel lobby and bars and meet up with people I know throughout baseball, catch up and from there meet new people in the game. I have a few connections so I managed to get an invite to the Scout of the Year Reception and also plan on attending the Rule V Draft on Thursday."
So people go to make trades. People go to get signed or get their clients signed. Others go to support the first two. But let's not forget that the entire baseball industry is down in Las Vegas this week. And also those who want to get into it.
The NFL cut 150 jobs yesterday. Ironic that MLB's biggest job fair and overall networking event of the year is occurring at the same time. Players want jobs. College kids want jobs. Guys working for teams, or the league, want new jobs; to move up the ladder. Guys like Gabriel Alvarez, the new friend of Jimmy Scott's High & Tight.
Here's some information on the MLB job fair. If you're not in Vegas right now, maybe next year:
"Get in on the ground floor and build your future by attending baseball's most popular meeting and seminar to find YOUR job in professional baseball.
"The PBEO Job FairTM (Professional Baseball Employment Opportunities) provides registrants a look at the business of professional baseball as well as an excellent opportunity to find employment. On average, 350-450 jobs are posted annually at the Job Fair.
"Many of these jobs are entry-level positions and internships. However, some positions are for those with prior baseball experience or a related background looking for the next challenge. Most Minor League BaseballTM and Major League Baseball teams will be hiring for positions beginning in January, 2009. Therefore, it is preferable for attendees to have graduated by December, 2008.
"For those of you who are not graduating until May of 2009, make sure to focus on Short-Season Minor League Baseball clubs, as they do not start play until June. For a list of these clubs, please visit the classification page on MiLB.com."
