When I Was Traded

March 25, 1995

As Jimmy Scott stood outside his Lake Forest home last month, he had two premonitions. “First, the strike was going to finally end and we’d be at spring training very soon. And second, I was a goner.”

While his first premonition came true rather quickly, it was his second that surprised everybody. Everybody but him.

“I knew the club wanted to go in a different direction,” Scott said in a news conference yesterday. “And I was fairly certain they didn’t want me holding the compass.”

So ends the storied career of one of Chicago’s most talented homegrown pitchers, who’ll don a New York uniform this morning for the first time at Florida camp. His run-ins with management will no doubt become stuff of legend, but his teammates will always consider him one of the best.
