Jimmy Scott isn’t just blogging. He’s also building a How-To guide to baseball retirement.
In a recent post on Jimmy Scott’s
new website, recently launched as a replacement for his
blog-only site, Jimmy spoke about the end of his storied career. “The sun is setting, and I’ve got to get the right glasses before I go blind.” In other words, when he takes off his uniform that last time, he doesn’t want the rest of his life to end too.
“Jimmy’s searching for something,” his wife Vanessa recently said in a speech at a fundraiser for Lyme Disease research. “I’m not sure what it is.”
Scott has been a Major League Baseball fixture for 20 years. His announcement earlier this year that he would no longer speak to the media launched protests from a wide-ranging array of interested parties, including his manager, GM, fellow teammates and, of course, the media itself.
But maybe it was part of a larger plan. “I think not talking was his first step away from the game,” his father, former pitcher and current NYS game announcer “Red” Scott says. “He’s the kind of guy who needs to take baby steps with everything new he tries, or else he’ll never try anything.”
His website has evolved from a blog-only outlet to a storage facility for All Things Jimmy. His blog is still there. But so are pictures. His career stats. Forums and discussion threads. And now, audio “podcast” interviews with retired players, giving Jimmy advice on what to do when his eventual Hall of Fame career does end.
