USA Cares: Real Wives & Real War

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 12 June 2009

My buddy Garrett Berger from iFungo forwarded an email to me that I'm reprinting below.  It's from the Director of Business Development at USA Cares. I don't need to summarize the letter.  You can read for youself.  If you have a few minutes of extra time, maybe you can help some of our returning soldiers coming home from war.  God bless 'em.

Subject: USA CARES

Hello everyone,

I hope you all are doing great this fine summer day.  I wanted to touch base with you regarding a phone call I had yesterday from a lady here at Fort Knox who reached out to me for help on behalf of USA Cares. She said a friend gave her my information and knew I would be able to help her. After talking to this lady I knew what she wanted did not fall into our usual
realm of what we did but in hearing her story I also knew I couldn't leave it at we don't do this I had to see if I could help in some way.

The lady who called me was from the 3rdESG.  She is the wife of a soldier that will be returning home soon.  All she was able to tell me about the time was it would be sometime in July when the first group came home and they would continue to come home in groups up thru September.

What she was looking for was help in providing some special things to those soldiers who will be coming home with no one to greet them. They  have about 90 soldiers that are a combination of bachelors and what they call geographical bachelors which are soldiers who do have wives but are somewhere else and won't be here to greet them. She would particularly like to focus on the 30 single guys who don't have anyone anywhere to have something special in their package they make up for them. They have a place to stay and the wives are making up their rooms for them. She asked if we could send her things like dop kit items, magazines and books, tee shirts or anything they could give them to make them feel a little special since they don't have anyone. This is something that is very special to these wives and I just couldn't tell her no.

We have some things here that were donated to us to send off for our Operation Back Pack kits which we can donate to this for the soldiers. I thought I would reach out to those of you in the community to see if you would be able to do anything as well to really make their return home special.

I told Catharyn I would be getting back with her in a few days to see if I would be able to help her out. If you think your company/organization would want to help with making these soldiers trip back a little more special and know that there are folks here who care please contact me and let me know.

Thank you for your time and support!

Your Friend at USA Cares,

Kim
