Sticking Up For Scott Schoeneweis

By Jimmy Scott - Posted on 05 December 2009

I wrote a couple of posts this week about the release of Gabrielle Schoeneweis's cause of death.  The second post did not paint a very flattering picture of her husband, Scott, who is currently a free agent.  Tatum Borowski, wife of former MLB pitcher Joe, sent me an email this evening that shows Scott Schoeneweis from a different angle.  I am going to reprint it now so you can see the other side.  I will also include my response.

"I would like to start by saying that I am a personal friend of Scott's, reading your recent article absolutely saddened me. As a baseball wife, a mother and a human being with a heart, I feel compelled to share some of my thoughts.

"First and foremost Scott is a 36 year old grieving widow and a father to 4 young children not to mention a professional athlete who has to endure public scrutiny on a daily basis. His life as he hoped and dreamed it would be has been forever altered. I often try to imagine what it is like to be in his shoes and time and time again give myself the same answer "I can't."

"There are literally so many positives to focus on with this family... one particular instance has always stood out in my mind .....when dropping my children off at school one day, I happened to be walking in at the same time as the Schoeneweis children, as always _____ looked impeccable but I couldn't help but notice how  adorable her hair looked in perfect pig tails and beautiful matching barrettes so I asked her "______, who did your hair this morning, it looks amazing?"  She looked at me with her adorning green eyes, grinning and laughing as always and simply replied "My Daddy."

"This is a man who dotes on his 14 year old daughter while he sits at her high school volley ball games, a man who coaches his 7 year old son's football and basketball teams, a man who puts pig tails in his 5 year old daughter's hair , a man who takes his 1 year old daughter to Gymboree class faithfully every week.....point and case being, this is a man who is simply trying to raise his unbelievable children by himself without having to shield them from turning on a television or distract them from the helicopters that are flying over their house.  I am sure that anyone who knows the Schoeneweis family personally could add to my list of pleasantries for they are all well deserved.

"Hopefully fact can at some point over ride fiction."

My response:

I appreciate your email and your thoughts.  You are acting like a good friend and your input is understood and heartfelt.  If I may, I'd like to reprint what you wrote on the website so that readers can see your personal viewpoint.  I will keep it anonymous unless you want your name to be used and I will also keep the names of the kids out of it.

It is great that you shared your thoughts with me and I think it would be even better if others could see the side of him that you refer to.  I really tried to be objective, but maybe I made the wrong choice in posting my thoughts in the first place.  I never want to hurt people, but I'd be lying if I told you it didn't occur to me that he would be offended by the article if he ever saw it.  So I know where you're coming from and I respect that.

Sincerely,
Jimmy

Nice to her the positive side of this story. My heart aches for this family and what they are going through! The las thing the need is public scrutiny - I firmly believe Scott is only trying to protect his children.

The Schoeneweis' tragedy has saddened me since that May evening when I learned Gabrielle had passed away. Having known Scott since we were both in elementary school and later playing both baseball and soccer with him, he became a close friend that I admired for many more things than just his athletic gifts. As each of our lives took different directions, it became hard to both talk and see each other frequently but I always made sure to follow his baseball career and more importantly find out how his family was doing. I would like to thank Tatum for sharing a side of Scott that I knew existed but was unable to witness since we live in opposite ends of the country. You also deserve credit Jimmy for sharing her email and giving both sides of the story. Although I did not agree with your earlier posts, I understand your choice and recognize you were sourcing info that was already available on the Internet. BTW, your interview with Gabrielle was excellent and I know that your time spent talking with her was the basis for following the Schoeneweis' story. Although I do not know where things go for his family, I can only hope for happy lives for each of their 4 children.
