That Dave Cash Interview Everyone Is Talking About

You want to hear something good?  You want to learn, in a fun, educational way, about baseball in the 1970s, about labor strife, about Vietnam, about contract disputes?  Want to hear about the first free agents?  Want to hear what it means to be a "roving" anything in baseball, be it hitting instructor or infield coach?  Want to hear some untold stories about Johnny?  Then Dave Cash can tell you.

Dave Cash began his playing career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he was part of the 1971 World Championship team.  He was on the Phillies Eastern Division winning team in 1976 and played for 3 All-Star teams.  He had over 200 hits in a season twice, leading the National League in 1975.  In fact, '75 was a very good year for Dave (yes, we're on a first name basis).  He led the league in hits (215), singles (166), at bats (699), plate appearances (766), and games played (162).  He finished 2nd in doubles (40), runs scored (111) and at bats per strikeout (20.6).  Do that today in your free agent year and you'll earn a sturdy (minimum) $10 million per year over four.  Of course, Dave wasn't in his free agent year, since free agency didn't exist.  He had to play 1976 before he could move on to Montreal.  Why did he leave the Phillies?  Listen and learn.

Nowadays, Dave is the hitting coach for the Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am League.  His manager, Hal Lanier, was our special guest last week.

I will now refrain from describing my conversation with the great Dave Cash.  As he says when I ask him if his players know who he is, and what he did on the playing field, "My statistics tell them everything."  That's a paraphrase.  For the exact quote (which I can't exactly remember), listen to our interview.
