Jimmy Scott's High & Tight: The Wayne Gomes Interview
Years ago, Rolaids aired television commercials using the theme, "How do you spell relief?" This related to baseball so much the brand sponsored the Rolaids Relief Man Award for the best relief pitchers in the American & National Leagues each year. This sponsorship still goes on today. Wayne Gomes, former relief pitcher for the Phillies, Giants and Red Sox, never won the award. But when he was chosen as the overall 4th pick in the 1993 amateur draft, expectations were high that he'd win the award over and over again.
What happened? In the Jimmy Scott's High & Tight Wayne Gomes Interview, Wayne talks about his career, how just getting picked at all exceeded his expectations, how he came back to early from injury one season because he was arbitration eligible and how that affected him on the field. Wayne talks about how hard the game is to play in the first place and how, when he finally called it quits, he was fine with the decision.
But there's more.
There's a country below the United States called Mexico. They play baseball in Mexico. Wayne played baseball in Mexico. How did he get there? How much did he get paid? What was the experience like? Find out all the gory details about baseball down under (down under America, that is). And learn how a guy can make it back to Triple A, put up great statistics, and still not get called up to the big leagues.
Then there's the Virgina Baseball Academy. This is Wayne's baby. He tells us why he started the academy, how he did it, and how, at 35, he has his life planned to be done with everything (except living) by 50.
This is a good one. Enjoy yourself as you hear the smooth strains of Wayne Gomes talk to me about baseball and its after-effects if you take it as a drug for too many years. I think you'll find it all quite interesting.
