Tommy John - The Prequel to Part III (which we can call Part Two)
If you thought my interview with Tommy John the first go-around was eventful, and short, you'll be quite pleased with this follow up, held exactly one week later. You see, Tommy had to cut me off 11 minutes into Part I. Something about "a meeting." Was he blowing me off? Did he think Jimmy Scott, while an incredible pitcher, was a horrible interviewer? That's what I thought. I thought he could sense my impending baldness right through the phone. But no. I was wrong. Yes, a first for me. It turns out Tommy cut me off 11 minutes into Part I because he had "a meeting."
So we got together on the phone again. This time, Tommy spent almost 20 minutes talking about more stuff, like a bitter 1975 contract dispute, Walter Alston's crappy attitude, pitching for the Yankees, the A's, the Angels, and eventually agreeing to retire in spring training with the Yankees, only to pitch another 4 seasons with them.
He's a man who don't take no crap. He's Tommy John. My closest, personal friend ever. At least, until I can get Tom Seaver to say Yes to me.
