Jimmy Scott's High & Tight: The Dick Drago Interview
I've come to know what we're going to get when talking to guys who made their living on the baseball diamond in the 70s. Stories. Un-edited talk. Laughs (mostly). Most of all, you get a bunch of guys who laid it all out there 30+ years ago and lived to tell. Dick Drago is one of those guys.
I just happened to interview Dick on his 64th birthday. Was this something that he really wanted to do? Wouldn't he rather be out doing...something other than talking to me? Nope. He said he was glad to spend the time. And what a time we had.
Part I
How many times have you heard people talk about playing for the expansion Kansas City Royals 1969 team? If your answer is, "Not too many at all, Jimmy," then you'll find this interesting. Because he'd signed with the Detroit Tigers, his favorite team growing up, and then chosen by KC in the 1968 off season expansion draft. That was the start of Dick's time with the Royals and dislike for the Detroit Tigers. Would you like it if your betrothed gave you away? Didn't think so.
Part II 11:00
Managers. Dick played for loads of 'em. There was Earl Weaver, Bob Lemon, Darrell Johnson, Jack McKeon, Dick Williams, Maury Wills, Don Zimmer. You know the names. There were also some other names that you probably don't remember. Dick recounts each one and explains why he liked some and very strongly disliked some others. This is good stuff.
Part III 23:00
Think about that 70s and the guys who played back then. Jim Rice, Rod Carew, (Dick Drago), Reggie Jackson... Hall of Famers and more are discussed. What an era. Then, remember the 1981 work stoppage? We get into that a bit because, well, you just don't hear much about that anymore. Finally, he's got a blog called The Dragon's Den. Did you know that? Check it out HERE.
Part IV 33:00
Dick gets into his first bout with free agency and why he signed with the Red Sox for a 2nd go-around. He also talks a little bit more about his feelings on the early-Kansas City Royals before talking about The End of his career and his release from another expansion team, the Seattle Mariners. What comes around, goes around I guess.
It's time to put away your cares and listen to a man who spent his 64th birthday talking to me for you. We talk, we banter, we laugh, and you will too. So enjoy every moment of Jimmy Scott's High & Tight: The Dick Drago Interview.
